To promote global understanding, learning, and camaraderie through dialogue, Sophie Gerson Healthy Youth (SGHY) and Communities Rising (CR) have teamed up to launch Global Classroom. This initiative serves as a digital video pen pal platform for middle schoolers worldwide.
Sophie Gerson's personal story is the driving force behind this program. Growing up in the Bronx amidst the financial hardships of the Great Depression, Sophie's public school French teacher connected her with a pen pal from Corbeil, France. For years, they wrote heartfelt letters to one another, forging a deep bond. Even without meeting face-to-face, it was evident from Sophie's recollections that their friendship was genuine and profoundly impactful. Their communication was tragically interrupted by World War II, right before the German invasion of France. After the war, Sophie tried to reconnect, but her friend remained unreachable. The outcome of her friend's fate during the war remains unknown. Global Classroom is passionate about nurturing such profound international bonds, hoping for more joyous endings.
